Groups Make Another Push for Protection of Organ Mountains

Posted by KUNM Radio on March 21, 2012

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A coalition of archaeologists, historians, former Las Cruces mayors and a former governor are urging federal lawmakers to protect southern New Mexico’s Organ Mountains and the Desert Peaks region.

They gathered Tuesday in Las Cruces to throw their support behind legislation sponsored by U.S. Sens. Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall. The measure introduced by the New Mexico Democrats would protect nearly 400,000 acres of public land in Dona Ana County.

The groups want a national monument to be created in the area.

Former Governor Jerry Apodaca says that would protect a cross section of some of the state’s most unique history, from an Apollo Space Mission training area to Billy the Kid’s Outlaw Rock.

Supporters contend the creation of a monument would ensure that public lands remain open to hunting, grazing, hiking, camping and horseback riding.

KUNM Seeks Show Hosts

Posted by KUNM Radio on February 2, 2010

Hosts Sought for Two KUNM Programs:
“Route 66” and “The House That Jazz Built”

“Route 66”
Airing each Saturday from 8:00 to 10:00pm, “Route 66” is a music program focusing on vintage American rhythm and its revivalists. Working from the KUNM Music Library and other sources, the volunteer host will present a mix of Jump Blues, early R&B and Latin Rock, Rockabilly, Western Swing, Surf and related styles, including revivalists and appropriate elements of remix culture. If not strictly speaking a “Dance Show,” the program will aim to get booties shaking across the listening area and to draw listeners from multiple generations. In addition to the weekly “Route 66” host, KUNM seeks qualified substitutes; please include information about your availability your application. Radio experience is preferred for “Route 66” hosts, but the right candidate can be trained.

“The House That Jazz Built”
The House That Jazz Built airs Sundays from 11 p.m. until 1 a.m. The show incorporates
creative music from the past thirty years, highlighting cutting-edge or avant-garde work of contemporary artists. The program features longer, more challenging pieces than you are likely to hear on weekdays during KUNM’s “All That Jazz.”
A volunteer show host is sought who has experience and knowledge of this genre. The successful candidate must host regular Sunday night shifts. Experience in programming and broadcasting is preferred, but the right candidate can be trained.

KUNM, in collaboration with La Montanita Co-Op, presents a showing of the film, The Real Dirt on Farmer John,

the epic tale of a maverick Midwestern farmer, Wednesday, February 17 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Albuquerque Journal Theater.

Then stay with us for a panel discussion with local food experts moderated by KUNM News Reporter Sarah Gustavus.

For more information call 277-2163.

About the film:

An outcast in his community, Farmer John bravely stands amidst a failing economy, vicious rumors, and violence. By melding the traditions of family farming with the power of art and free expression, this powerful story of transformation and renewal heralds a resurrection of farming in America.

The film is a haunting odyssey, capturing what it means to be different in rural America.

Director Taggart Siegel Collective Eye made the film in a most unusual way – shooting farmer John Peterson over 25-years of their evolving friendship, and using multiple media, from 8 mm home movies shot on the farm in the 50’s and 60’s to modern video – allowing him to capture his alternately humorous, heartbreaking and spirited life with raw drama and intimacy.

With the death of his father during the late 60s, a teen-aged John takes over the traditional family farm, slowly turning it into an experiment of art and agriculture, making it a haven for hippies, radicals and artists. The Real Dirt on Farmer John charts the end of this idealistic era as the farm debt crisis of the 80’s brings about the tragic collapse of the farm.

As the intricate weave of rural America unravels, vicious local rumors turn John into a scapegoat, condemning him as a Satan-worshipping drug-dealer. Threatened with murder, his home burned to the ground, John forsakes his farm and wanders through Mexico, where he is transformed by the soulfulness and pageantry of this ancient land. Mysteriously, his quest leads him back to his hostile homeland.

Defying all odds, he gradually transforms his land into a revolutionary farming community, a cultural mecca, where people work and flourish providing fresh vegetables and herbs to thousands of people every week.

The Peterson family farm has become Angelic Organics, one of the largest Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms in the United States, a beacon of today’s booming organic farming movement.
